Com aéreos espetaculares, Filipinho levou a plateia ao delírio para somar 7.67 e 7.50 na vitória sobre o havaiano John John Florence e os norte-americanos Kolohe Andino e Conner Coffin.
É a primeira competição do garoto de Ubatuba como atleta da Nike 6.0. Depois de passar pela semifinal de forma emocionante, com uma virada em cima do havaiano Tanner Hendrickson na última onda, Filipinho entrou com tudo na final e não deu mole aos adversários.

"É inacreditável vencer essa galera bastante badalada aqui na América e que sempre vejo quebrando nos eventos. Todos eles têm títulos importantes e esta vitória significa muito pra mim. Estou muito feliz!", comemora Filipinho, 16 anos.
